Shoot me in the foot and tell me it's raining.
Americans represent less than 5 percent of the world's population so by all rights they should contribute less than 5 percent of the worlds pollution right? Well, not quite.... Americans contribute 9 times more than they "should". 45 percent of the world's emission of carbon dioxide, the main pollutant that causes global warming, is contributed by Americans according to a report by the nonprofit group Environmental Defense.
Americans own 30 percent of the world's vehicles, drive farther each year than the international average and burn more fuel per mile, the report says. Additonally, the sport utility boom of the past decade put vehicles on the road that could be spewing carbon dioxide for years to come.
So what can you do to reduce your impact? Next time you purchase a vehicle, buy a hybrid. Not all hybrids are compromise. While the Toyota Prius has the least impact on the environment, the Honda Accord Hybrid has lots of power while still maintaining a very low air pollution standard.
John Mendel, American Honda senior VP, says, "The Accord Hybrid is unique in that it delivers performance and environmental responsibility without compromising one for the other." The Integrated Motor Assist 3-liter V6 plays its part - putting out 253 hp, 9 hp more than the gasoline-only version.

Freakishly warm in the Midwest for over a month
here is an excerpt from Paul Kocin's blog titled: "Dead as the Dinosaurs"
'Since December 22, the first full day of winter, Bismarck has recorded 36 consecutive days of above-normal temperatures. Of those 36 days, only 2 days have averaged less than 10 degrees above normal. Eleven of those 36 days have averaged more than 20 degrees above normal and the entire period has averaged nearly 18 degrees above normal! What is really unique about this period is its unyielding persistence. Not one of those 36 days was even close to average, let alone legitimately "cold"!'

February 1, 2006 0900 PST (FTW) -- The following passage appeared on the New York Times’ “World Briefing” web page yesterday.
Had not the London subway bombings taken place last July 7th the top headline for the day might have been “Blair Breaks With Bush Over Global Warming at G8”. That’s what happened that day but we never got to hear that in the news. For almost a full year British papers and other media have been screaming about the imminent danger of global warming and climate collapse. It is just amazing to see something so important in Britain and so significant for all of us buried like this in the American press. It’s like the American media believes that we live on some other planet. Britain knows where it is situated and it is already in deep water.
Now this:
BRITAIN: BLAIR WARNING ON CLIMATE CHANGE The threat posed by climate change may be "greater than we thought," and global warming from the emission of greenhouse gases, is advancing at a "rate that is unsustainable," Prime Minister Tony Blair said in a new report based on government-sponsored research. The report, Avoiding Dangerous Climate Change, warned that the huge West Antarctic ice sheet might be starting to disintegrate, an event that could raise sea levels by 16 feet. A previous report played down worries about the ice sheet's stability and characterized it as a "slumbering giant." The new report says, "It is now an awakened giant," adding, "There is real concern." (AP)

Great Barrier Reef Endangered by Global Warming
CANBERRA, Australia (UPI) -- Australia`s ongoing hot summer season is reportedly inflicting great harm to the Great Barrier Reef.
University of Queensland scientists say they are concerned the entire reef may be at risk of destruction from global warming.
Coral reef expert Professor Ove Hoegh-Guldberg told the Australian Broadcasting Corp. he is praying for two months of cyclonic stormy weather to stir up colder deeper water -- the only thing that will save the coral.
Hoegh-Guldberg is convinced global warming is to blame for placing the reef in danger.
'No one with any credibility in this field is doubting that we`re seeing the first signs of a major change in an ecosystem due to climate change,' he told the ABC.
'It simply underscores the absolutely critical importance of getting global greenhouse emissions under control because we could end up with a world where we don`t have the Great Barrier Reef -- that would be an absolute tragedy.'
The Great Barrier Reef, the largest natural feature on Earth, stretches more than 1,400 miles along the northeastern coast of Australia, covering more than 186,000 square miles. The reef is visited by more than 2 million tourists annually.
